The Restaurant Redesigners: Contento

Before Yannick Benjamin, Oscar Lorenzzi, George Gallego, Mara Rudzinski, and Lorenz Skeeter began to conceptualize the menu or wine list for Contento in New York City, they thought about the restaurant’s design. They imagined the bar with a lower countertop for wheelchair users, QR codes on menus to prompt spoken audio for low-vision customers, and adaptive flatware with easier grip for anyone who needed extra support. They pictured their employees and diners—and how both should experience comfort and dignity in the space, irrespective of ability.

“The greatest compliment we get is that we created a culture where people can be themselves,” Benjamin says. “They don’t feel rushed or judged.”
