In a welcome move, Amazon plans to add a new disability fiction subcategory to the Adult Fiction section of its online bookstore.

Amazon commonly deploys publishing industry standard Thema codes used by publishers and retailers to enhance book sales and make titles more discoverable and their subject matter consistently identifiable across international markets.

Following a change to the Thema category scheme, authors and publishers can now apply the new Thema code to the book’s metadata making it easier for consumers to explicitly explore and identify stories containing disability themes and providing the genre with some much-needed enhanced visibility.

The decision by the Jeff Bezos-owned online behemoth to adopt the new subcategory came about as a result of tireless campaigning earlier this year by writers Penny Batchelor and Victoria Scott – two authors who extensively cover disability in their novels.
