After a Covid-19 break, we are so excited to share we will be holding our 11th Annual Her Power! Event for teen girls* with disabilities. We can’t wait to expand on the over 250 girls we have served in the past.
The 11th Annual Her Power! Event is being held July 28th – July 31st at Camp Fish Tails (Pinconning, Michigan). Her Power! is a program of Michigan Disability Rights Coalition and LETA Solutions.
Her Power! works directly with girls with disabilities through a unique, four-day, overnight event designed to promote critical thinking about society’s messages, eliminate shame, develop leadership skills and encourage self-acceptance. This event is built on the best practices of the disability justice community and emerging research in female development and goes beyond self-esteem programming to provide a venue for real self-empowerment.
We aim to be fully inclusive of all individuals with disabilities (including invisible disabilities). Her Power! Provides paid personal attendant services, a 24-hour nurse, and inclusive menus for people with medical/religious dietary needs. Our staff are all disabled women, trauma-informed, and undergo full background checks each year.
Our work is based in disability pride. We promote these radical notions:
- People with disabilities are not broken.
- There is no reason to feel shame associated with disability.
- All people should be able to embrace their unique differences and accept all aspects of who they are as individuals.
- The work to end gender violence includes working to end systems of oppression, including but not limited to: racism, classism, sizeism, ableism, sexism, heterosexism, etc.
Registration is now open and available through google forms. (or you may use the word form). You do not need to fill out the medical information until after you register.
