Military Caregivers Are Our Hidden Heroes

By Robert Mauterstock: For More Info, Go Here…

Typically most families provide care for elderly parents when they begin to fail. As I mentioned in my column of Dec. 14 , over 40 million people are providing unpaid care in the U.S. for family members and two thirds of those caregivers are women. The value of this care is $450 billion dollars a year which is equal to 18% of all national health care spending. (AARP Public Policy Institute, 2011)

But a segment of the caregiving population has gone unnoticed. These 5.5 million military caregivers are the “Hidden Heroes” who care for our veterans. Over 1 million of them are providing care for veterans who served in the military after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
